John Roberts, who is one of the most sensitive and perceptive pianists on the local scene, provided a good deal of listening pleasure in a recital at the Conservatorium of Music.
It would have been worth attending of only to hear his superlative account of Liszt’s Wild Hunt.
This is not music for timid pianists: it is no man’s land for any but the most accomplished of musicians and Roberts romped through this appallingly difficult music with huge flair, unflagging momentum and the nonchalance of mastery.
Roberts has an excellent physical command of the keyboard, but virtuosity is never used as an end in itself. Rather, this digital brilliance is invariably placed at the service of whatever he plays, and the result, more often than not, is a performance of memorable quality.
